We request the entire layout and formatting of the inside pages be saved as a PDF file with all fonts and images embedded and saved at 300 dpi resolution. The inside pages should be created to the finished trim size of the book and saved as one complete PDF file containing all inside pages. Add blank pages wherever you feel is appropriate to end up with an (even) number of pages. The outside cover should be composed together as one separate file including the front, spine, and rear cover. Extend an .125 inch bleed all around the perimeter of the composed book cover. Save as a PDF file with all fonts and images embedded and saved at 300 dpi resolution. Please review our file requirements below.
Your book spine size is automatically configured for you when using our Instant Quote calculator. You can manually do this by dividing the total number of inside text pages including blank pages, by the ppi (pages per inch) of the paper used. For example White 50# Offset is 512 ppi. If your book is 300 total inside pages, divide 300 by 512 = 0.586 inches. Make your book spine width 0.586 inches.
The International Standard Book Number, or ISBN, is the most important identifier you will link to your book. ISBN numbers provide unique identification of your books and simplify the distribution of books throughout the global supply chain. It explains exactly which book is being bought and sold; down to the version, size, and format. Paperback books, hardcover books, wire bound books, and booklets, all require different ISBN numbers. Without an ISBN, you will not be found in most bookstores or libraries, either online or down the street from your house. With an ISBN, you can sell your book anywhere in the world.
If your book is going to be printed, it should have a barcode. Most bookstores require a special barcode called the Bookland EAN Barcode. Books use the Bookland EAN Barcode because it allows for the encoding of ISBN numbers.
The official source in the United States for ISBN information, Barcodes, and ISBN purchase is Bowker

Highly recommended when you want to see “what your book will look like” before the final printing. Your proof is printed on the same devices as production, using the actual specified paper, bound, and trimmed to the finished book size. This proof option will give you added assurance, should you have specific concerns.
Books previously printed by Lightning Press are FREE of any file charges or storage fees. No proof is needed when there are no file changes and you need more books printed.
Paper is sold by weight. So within a particular paper category a heavier sheet is more expensive than a lighter weighing sheet. In general Coated Paper is more expensive than Offset Paper. To help determine the thickness of your book we have listed how many pages per inch “ppi” each paper is. Our papers are also acid-free for archival quality and our paper merchants are environmentally responsible and FSC®, SFI or PEFC chain-of-custody certified.
Text Paper (Inside Pages)
50# Offset 512 ppi is our most common and economical paper and is available in White or Natural.
60# Offset 434 ppi is a little thicker and heavier with slightly less show-through. Available in White or Natural.
70# Offset 376 ppi is thicker still and heavier with even less show-through. Also available in White or Natural.
40# Offset 644 ppi is very thin and frequently only used for books over 500 pages. Only available in White.
Coated 80# Text 444 ppi is a premium sheet and great for color images and photos. Available in a Gloss or Dull finish.
Coated 100# Text 350 ppi is also a premium sheet but thicker and heavier. Available in a Gloss or Dull finish.
60/24 lb. 488 ppi and 70/28 lb. 434 ppi is a premium Ultra Smooth Bright White (98 Brightness) sheet. Being Ultra Smooth this sheet bulks less than the Offset sheets. It’s Bright White color provides high contrast of your images for those special needs. Contact us for availability.
Outside Cover Paper
10 pt. C1S (Coated 1 Side) is our standard paper used for paperback book covers. 12 pt. C1S is an upgrade option.
100# Coated Cover is great for 2 sided paperback book covers. It is mainly used for high quality images and photos when printing 2 sided (outside and inside) book covers. This cover paper is Coated 2 Sides, matches our Coated Text paper and comes in a Gloss or Dull finish.
Full Color Hardcover book covers are printed on 100# Coated Text, laminated and glued to thick ridged board.
Foil Stamped Hardcover book covers are available with the popular B-Cloth material. Contact us for the numerous cloth colors available. We also have a Leatherette material with a leather-like embossed surface. These premium materials are glued to thick ridged board. Choose Gold or Silver Foil Stamping.
Dust Jackets are an upgrade option and printed on 100# Coated Text, laminated and wrapped around the outside of a Hardcover book. They typically have 3.75 inch folded flaps that hold it to the front and back covers. When you want your book to look extra special choose this option.
Film Lamination is used on the outside cover of your book. We use the highest quality Lay-Flat Nylon Film Lamination that provides superior protection while enhancing the appearance of your book cover. This premium Nylon Film Laminate allows the paper to breath, minimises curl, and has a SuperStick® adhesive so the laminate sticks to the book cover like glue.
Gloss is the most popular finish and it really makes colors POP on your book cover. Our gloss finish gives the appearance of Smooth Liquid Glass while adding strength and durability to your book covers. A customers favorite!
Matte is also an option and provides a more toned down subdued look. We use the industry’s best Diamond Hard Velvet Matte finish that is scuff resistant, non-glare, and Soft-To-Touch. Customers really love this soft suede-like texture!
Paperback books are perfect bound and hinge-scored for strong, square binds. Pages are milled, notched, and roughened for maximum adhesive penetration. We use a low temperature Hot Melt Adhesive with superior bonding characteristics for strength and longevity. Our paperback book sizes range from 3.5″ x 5″ to 12″ x 12″ with a book thickness of .04″ to 2″. The Landscape Book Layout Format, which is binding on the short edge, is available and is a popular horizontal layout option for Children’s Books.
Hardcover books are of the best quality, case bound and super strong while meeting rigorous library specifications. Pages are milled, notched, and roughened for maximum adhesive penetration. We use a high quality adhesive with excellent pulling strength so your pages stay in place. Hardcover books over .375″ thick include decorative headbands for no additional charge. Our hardcover book sizes range from 3.5″ x 5″ to 12″ x 12″ with a book thickness of .04″ to 3″. The Landscape Style is also available.
Booklets are folded and Saddle-Stitch Stapled with metal wire up to an unusually high page count of 140 pgs. When printing thick booklets our booklet making capabilities create a square folded edge and printable spine that gives the appearance of a perfect bound book. This allows the booklets to stack better while still remaining flat when open. Square fold booklets are a unique cost effective solution that look professional, are super strong with sizes ranging from 5.5″ x 8.5″ to 9″ x 12″. This is a great new option.
Wire Bound books use the Wire-O® system with black metal wire and are superior in strength and appearance compared to the common plastic coil binding. Wire bound books will open flat and stay flat making it an ideal solution for notebooks, instruction manuals, text books, and cook books. As the book opens completely flat, images that run across two pages are effectively presented. Sizes range from 3.5″ x 5″ to 8.5″ x 11″ with a maximum thickness of 1.25″. The Landscape Book Layout Format is also available.
